Death by Meeting

“People who enjoy meetings should not be in charge of anything.”

-Thomas Sowell

Of course there is a need for meetings but we hear from clients who are all too often in rote, low-value, endless meetings that have strayed from their original objectives or agenda.  Try this simple test:

  • Does this particular task/effort truly require a meeting?
  • Is the purpose for the meeting clear to everyone?
  • Is the meeting being used for that purpose?
  • Are only the people who need to be there attending the meeting?
  • Can the meeting time be cut by half or a quarter?

If the answer to every question is “Yes,” then be tenacious about holding as short a meeting as possible to achieve the purpose.
