High Performance Executives – Solving Problems

“Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.”

– Colin Powell

Inaction and allowing problems to linger without effective action kills a leader’s credibility and creates distractions that drain energy that would otherwise be focused constructively on advancing team, client and market objectives. Leadership is keeping the team moving forward at multiple levels and that does not happen when problems go unaddressed. When dealing with problems, leaders have to demonstrate that they are:

  • open and listening to different points of view
  • loyal to the truth over relationships
  • timely in their problem resolution
  • predictable in applying simply stated values in solving problems

Being liked, making people happy and trying to pander to or pacify specific individuals cannot be drivers of good problem resolution.
